How High Can a Dishwasher Pump Water?

A dishwasher drain hose is connected to the pump below the sink, connecting to the garbage disposal or the sink drain. How high the drain hose goes depends on the type of dishwasher you are using and the length of the hose. How Far Up Can a Washer Pump Water?

Depending on the washer you are using, the manufacturers provide a manual explaining how far your washer can pump water. 

However, most washing machines come with a drain pipe of 99cm. This means that the provided length is the effective length. 

The installation will affect the length too. If the space you want to install is further from the sewerage system, you might need an extension. In that case, you can get a standpipe about 18”. Adding a hose too long enables drained water to sip back into the washer. 

The volume of the water the washer drains also affects the distance you can install the washer. Water might slip back into the washer if the volume is too low. 

You should also test and find out how far your washers drain effectively. You can use a pipe cutter to reduce the size of the drain hose till you achieve the right length. 

Alternatively, you can consult your plumber if you are not knowledgeable about washers.

A washing machine pumps the drain water up to the sewerage. The washing machine drain hose is connected to a pump that does the job automatically. 

There are instances where the pump cannot fulfill its purpose. Suppose the only space you have is in the basement, and the sewerage line is above the ground? In this case, you will need to use a standpipe that is mostly 18” or buys a longer drain hose and connectors.

You can also use check valves to prevent water from going back to the washing machine. An external pump o motor can also work best if installed properly. Using this step and all the named devices will allow you to drain the washer up.

  • Unplug your washing machine from the power source. 
  • Locate the water supply lines and the drain hose. They are installed permanently at the back of the washer.  The supply pipes come in red for hot water, blue for cold water and grey for draining.
  • Shut off the water supply by turning off the blue and red knobs on the red and blue pipes. 
  • Disconnect the drain line from the sewer line and move the dishwasher away from the wall. 
  • Clean and dry the side that was connected to the drainage system. Use a connector to add the standpipe to the drain hose. 
  • Ensure you have placed the check valve in a perfect position.
  • At the pump under the sink, you can add a stronger motor to increase water pumping and connect the drain hose to the sewerage system again.
  • Turn back the water supply on, Push the washer back to the wall, plug back the electric code and test the washer. 

Add a more powerful pedestal if it does not pump the water up.

Conclusion

The brand of your dishwasher or washing machine will determine the length of the drain hose. You can connect the dishwasher far from the sink, but you will new other devices to aid the process.
